BUILDINGS in Ilkeston were lit up like Christmas trees last night in front of 800 people – when the festive lights were switched on.

Councillor Jennifer Hulls, the Mayor of Erewash, had the honour of pushing the plunger to bring the magic of Christmas to the town.

Ilkeston Brass Band entertained the crowds in the town's Market Place with seasonal songs and two of Santa's reindeer visited to see the children.

A performance on the violin was also given by Ilkeston music teacher Adrian Beale, while Victorian-inspired nativity scenes were set up inside illuminated displays – as part of the Pride in Erewash Festival of Light.
