Athletics: Weir celebrates call-up with lifetime best
DERBY AC middle distance runner Rich Weir has run a new lifetime best over 3000 metres after being selected for his first England vest.
Weir, from Belper, was part of a small England team that travelled to Linz, in Austria, for a European Athletics Indoor meeting.
In what was his first time racing overseas and his first track race of the year, Weir was faced with outdoor temperatures as low as -9C.
However, in coming sixth in the race, he chipped six seconds off his previous best for 3000m, finishing in 8.21.52 minutes.
Weir has raced sparingly through the winter under the guidance of David Sunderland, the national coach mentor for endurance.
"The focus continues to be on the outdoor track season and, despite my increased volume of training this winter under Dave, I think my endurance is still improving," said Weir.
"It was a great opportunity for me to go and race in Austria and I'm grateful for the support I was given."
Weir is due in action today, again over 3000m, at the World Indoor Trials in Sheffield.
