ONLY ONE WORKMAN COULD BE SEEN ON SITE
AS I stood on the bridge in King Street, overlooking St Alkmund's Way, a lone workman brandished his mop to wash down the roadside signs.
Eastbound traffic was backed up as far as Agard Street as the temporary traffic lights offered motorists 30 seconds or so to make their dash towards Causey Bridge.
Grumpy-faced drivers queuing up King Street and Duffield Road waited similarly for their fleeting moment of respite from the long drive into the city centre.
With the exception of the sign-cleaner, not another workman could be seen in either direction.

I spoke to a newsagent on the corner of North Street and Duffield Road.
"Someone came in earlier saying the traffic was backed up past Broadway," he said.
"I need to pop into town myself later, so I'll probably walk if it's still bad."

Wow, that's a heck of a walk.”
