POLICE are warning people to safeguard their purses and wallets after a spate of thefts in a Derbyshire town.

Over the last few weeks, officers in Alfreton have seen a rise in the number of thefts reported to police and the safer neighbourhood team.

Officers are now urging people to take extra precautions in making sure their property is secure in a bid to crack down on the problem.

PCSO Faye Attenborough, from the team, said: "People should avoid carrying large amounts of cash and keep your purse, wallet or handbag with you at all times, keeping a handbag closed and fastened as much as possible.

"Never leave your purse or wallet in your shopping basket, on tables or shop counters, and try not to overload yourself with bags and coats which may make it more difficult to keep track of your belongings."

Anyone with information relating to purse and wallet thefts in or around Alfreton should contact Derbyshire police on 0345 123 3333.
