WAYNE Madsen accepted the blame for handing Surrey a first innings lead of 154, even though he finished the day with a century to his name.

If not for the opener's 109, the Derbyshire innings would have been in a sorry state but Madsen admitted he got his shot selection badly wrong to end a valuable seventh-wicket stand of 137 with Lee Goddard.

His dismissal was the spark that saw the last four Derbyshire wickets fall for 19.

"I'm very pleased to have got a hundred but also really disappointed at the way I got out because I feel like I've let my team down," said Madsen, who was bowled attempting a reverse sweep.

"After doing all the hard work to get to that stage, it was a bad way for it to end. Maybe I was just starting to get a little bit too confident.

"I felt particularly sorry for Lee because he had got his first really good score of the season and my getting out put the pressure on him."

It was Madsen's third century of the season and his sixth in all for Derbyshire, while Goddard's 67 was his highest score in first-team cricket since his 91 against Surrey in the last game of his first spell with Derbyshire in 2006.
