Winner inspired by love of trains and photography
A SHOT of a train zipping through the Derbyshire countryside on a misty morning helped its snapper win a European photography contest.
Mark Scott, who drives CrossCountry trains, captured the train travelling on the Derby to Chesterfield line near Wingfield.
The 41-year-old, from Risley, visited his hilly vantage point three times to perfect the shot before it won the Arriva Photo of the Year competition.
He said: "Some mornings were too misty and the light wasn't right so I had to wait to get the right conditions. The picture was taken in the autumn and that's a lovely time of year for photography because the natural colours on show are amazing.
"I've been a keen photographer since my early teens and railways have always been the main attraction."
Mark won a £950 prize in the annual Arriva competition, which saw submissions made from all over Europe.
Eagle-eyed snappers across Derbyshire have been following in Mark's footsteps and taking their own shots of the autumn and winter skies.
Ruta Popika captured a rainbow tracing through a wintry morning sky over Cromford Canal at the end of November.
Claire Hodgkinson, of Allestree, took a photo of the sun setting over Allestree Park in a late November afternoon.
And David Edis captured a bright full moon over Derwent Heights, in Derby.
