Witty song indicated feelings towards queen
MAY I extend my warmest congratulations to Pauline Latham, MP, for her quite wonderful article on dementia? ("The Iron Lady has brought dementia into the spotlight", Derby Telegraph, February 3).
Nearly every issue of your paper seems bigger and better than ever.
I would also like to comment on a statement a lady makes on page 12 ("Rich history of magnificent mansion which was once fit for a queen"), "apparently King George IV didn't like his wife very much".
To begin with people in Britain sympathising with Caroline. Later, in that horribly prudish era, they tended to change their minds.
A popular song was current:
"Oh gracious queen, we thee implore,
To go away and sin no more,
Or if that effort prove too great,
To go away at any rate!"
At least people were witty then.
