A DERBY woodland is to be officially designated as a local nature reserve on Thursday.

Elm Wood, in Allenton, is one of just two ancient woodlands in the city.

Christopher Pennell, regional board member of Natural England, will officially mark the designation after walking through the wood with members of the public.

Deputy Mayor of Derby, Councillor Fareed Hussain, will also participate in the one-hour walk, followed by a celebration marking the 60th anniversary of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act at Moorways Sports Centre.

Anyone who is interested in taking part should meet at the Moorways Sports Centre car park, in Moor Lane, at 1pm.
