DERBY AC's Yasmin Miller admitted she did not expect to win gold on her English Schools Championships debut after confirming her position as one of the brightest young prospects in UK athletics with a stunning run.

The 13-year-old sprinter, still in the bottom bracket of her age group, came through a strong field to take the 75m hurdles title at Gateshead.

The St Benedicts' School pupil won the event with a time of 11.34secs.

“I am really pleased to win this,” said Miller.

“Despite having a good year I still wasn't expecting to win the gold, especially at an event like this.”

It was a good day all round for Derbyshire – despite terrible weather conditions – and the county led the way for medals from the other East Midlands teams.

Bakewell's Yasmine Spencer was another gold medal winner in the intermediate girls' shot put.

Her throw of 12.66m was a new personal best.

“It's the second time I've won at ESAA but what makes this even better was that the last time I won, I was at the top of the under-15 category.

“This time, I'm supposedly at the bottom of the under 17s,” said Spencer.

There were silver medals for Amber Valley's Claudia Rogers and Derby's Suzzi Palmer in the inter girls 300m hurdles and junior girls high jump respectively.

Emma Komocki finished fifth in the same event as club-mate Rogers.

Ed Mourbey, from Clay Cross, picked up a bronze medal in the senior boys pole vault.

Just missing out on medals were Derby's Jenna Winson, Lauretta Curtis and Chris Price, who all finished fourth in the senior girls hammer, inter girls 100m and junior boys pole vault respectively.

Derbyshire's intermediate girls team pushed the county into the highest position of the five East Midlands counties in the final points table to win the Goodwill Cup.

Derbyshire's junior girls finished runners-up in the Forrester Trophy.

The English Schools competition is the most prestigious annual event for young athletes in the country.

More than 1,600 competitors entered these 78th championships, which were broadcast live on Sky TV.
