MORE than 30 young achievers from Derby have been presented with awards by the Duke of Edinburgh.

They were among 120 young people from across the UK who attended a ceremony at St James' Palace in London after achieving their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

Eighteen of the 33 youngsters from Derby gained their award with Derby City Council's Darley Barn Open Award Unit, which caters specifically for those who don't have the opportunity to pursue the DofE award through their own school.

Councillor Martin Rawson, the council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "The Gold Award Presentation is a celebration and recognition of the achievement of completing the Gold DofE programme.

"It is a unique event and a fitting culmination to mark the hard work and perseverance required to achieve this prestigious award."

Kurt Clarke-Roome, who completed his Gold DofE with Darley Barn Open Award Centre, said: "The DofE award has been one of the best things I have ever done.

"I met people from all over the city and became closer to them than anyone else because of what we went through together.

"We walked in the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, and Snowdonia and I will never forget those expeditions due to the challenge, rewards and social aspects not only with participants but also the support from the leaders.

"I know I wouldn't be where I am today without completing the awards."

Anyone who is interested in enrolling for a DofE award in 2013 can attend an open question and answer session at Darley Barn, Darley Abbey, Derby on Monday, January 14 at 7pm.

“The DoE scheme is a fantastic opportunity for young people to try new things especially the volunteering and working for community section. Obviously in time of cuts, council cash input will be under scrutiny.
If access is limited to independent school pupils then it would be a great shame.”
