Do not adjust your set, you've got waxwings perched on your aerial
Do not adjust your set, you've got waxwings perched on your aerial. These beautiful birds have come all the way from Russia and Scandinavia to enjoy a winter in milder climes. The birds eat berries and, when their numbers grow, they move south in search of food. The numbers in the UK vary but in December and January there have been hundreds of reports of waxwings in many areas, including Allestree, Mickleover and Heanor. This picture was taken by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust volunteer Paul Shaw in Ilkeston, where he saw a flock of about 40 birds.

“I think waxwings are the most beautiful birds. Last time one was seen in Derby, the Cathedral sparrowhawks got it! On balance, I'd rather have the waxwings. A flock of them once landed on a bush loaded with berries outside my son's front window in Scotland - my camera was in the car! there's a fantastic YouTube clip of a flock on Fair Isle somewhere.”

“Have seen a group - didn't know what they were. Must admit I'd rather be here than in Russia!”
