More affordable 4x4s in Suzuki's growing range
SUZUKI is a manufacturer with a long history or building more affordable all-wheel-drive vehicles.
Remember the original 800cc LJ80 model, introduced into the UK back in March 1979? Next came the SJ410, SJ413 and the Samurai.
Now we have the Suzuki SX4 4Grip complementing the compact Jimny 4x4 in a range that also includes the larger Grand Vitara and the new Kizashi saloon with superior traction.
There is also the possibility that UK dealers may also get the four-wheel-drive version of the Swift supermini markets.
Popular with those seeking a more compact 4x4 is the SX4. It's built in a joint venture that also produces the Fiat Sedici, and is a compact car that blends the funky styling and greater ground clearance of a 4x4 with the fun-to-drive nature of the Swift supermini.
There are both two and four-wheel drive versions of the SX4 and the car can be ordered with either a 1.6-litre petrol engine or 1.6 and 1.9-litre diesels.
The all-drive, 1.9 DDiS car is unique in being the only vehicle in its class matching superior 4WD capability with a close-ratio, six-speed manual gearbox. What many like about the SX4 is that it is not unwieldy like some 4x4s and is no more difficult to park in a congested city street than a compact family hatchback.
It is also a frugal car because, in normal use, just the front wheels are driven.
The push of a button on the centre console brings traction all round when conditions get particularly tricky, with a further push engaging the 4WD lock mode which maintains full traction up to around 40mph before automatically switching to the auto mode for smooth cruising.
The model is called a sport crossover by Suzuki and is very much a car designed to cater for a growing audience seeking a new take on the conventional family hatchback or estate.
Roof rails, pronounced wheel arches, large side rubbing strips and sporty extensions on the bumpers give 4Grip SX4s an SUV appearance.
At the wheel, the SX4 gives the impression that you are driving a taller vehicle and visibility all round is excellent. I like the additional windows at the front in the style of an MPV.
In summary, the SX4 is a winner in my book by looking different, being very practical and offering a different take on the family hatchback.
It's also sturdy, very roomy and great to drive, with its 1.9-litre diesel engine delivering lusty performance and strong pulling power across a wide rev range in tandem with highly satisfactory economy.
Suzukis are sold in Derby by Clock Garage, in Nottingham Road, Spondon.
