I AGREE that something should be done to restore the Friar Gate railway bridge ("Friar Gate Bridge in sad state and needs action", Opinion, March 8). I have written before on this subject but it has fallen on deaf ears. And is it not time the Ram was cleaned?

    “Derby_born
I'm afraid I can find no mention of any Section 106 agreement in the conditions imposed on the planning decision for the 'copper box office' here -

“So your admitting it is copper now rather than some kind of plastic sheeting Derby_Born?

I agree the bridge needs a proper clean and remedial works, but if it is the case that the office developers are responsible under their planning permission, before jumping to legal action let the development be completed and give them half a chance to do the works. There may well be timescales in any planning papers, and it may well still be well within these timescales
    Patience dear boy.”

“Derby City Council purchased this bridge for £1, repaired, cleaned and painted it once in the thirty years since. It is a gateway for the city setting an example how we care about heritage and listed buildings. What does the council care, I can tell you not a jot. They have allowed numerous listed buildings to rot, be burnt down, become derelict, have alterations made to them not in keeping with the building all the time dragging their feet or saying it is too late to act. They cannot even look after their own listed buildings take St Helens House, the old bus station, Allestree Hall, Markeaton parks buildings or for that fact non-listed buildings. How can they take action against others when they cannot even manage their own listed properties etc. They talk of an heritage trail around the cathedral quarter. Is that to show people how to let buildings go derelict so they can be torn down for new build. Those responsible for looking after our heritage should be placed in the stocks.”

“agrred, Derby_born. I think it is something that this paper should be pursuing, certainly the Civic society and Heritage bods. After all, it is on the periphery of the Cathedral quarter and visitors have to pass under it to get to Pickford's house. It's not looking very well at all.”

“The restoration of Friar Gate Bridge was supposed to have been carried out under a 106 agreement with the developers of the new copper box office block on Agard Street. So far nothing has happened, maybe legal action should be taken to recover the refurbishment costs from the developer?”
