Career-best bowling from Graham Wagg and Greg Smith bowled Surrey out for 131 before tea on the first day of Derbyshire's LV County Championship match at the County Ground.

But Derbyshire also found batting tough as they struggled to 152-7 by the close, ahead by 21.

Wagg, not expected to play because of injury, finished with 6-35 and Smith with 3-18 after Surrey had won the toss and it was an unbroken stand of 64 between the two that took Derbyshire to a first innings lead.

Wagg took the first four wickets of the match, making the most of plenty of swing. Michael Brown went in the third over of the day, caught at first slip, and Laurie Evans was caught at second slip in the fifth.

When Usman Afzaal was bowled by a delivery that came back into him and Stuart Newman was caught at third slip, Surrey were 32-4.

Smith coaxed a loose drive from James Benning which was caught at point to make it 43-5 and it was 58-6 before lunch when Chris Jordan was lbw in the first over of Wagg's second spell.

Surrey were further disrupted when Chris Schofield retired hurt on 10 after sharing a seventh-wicket stand of 41 with Jon Batty.

Wagg returned for a third spell to get Batty lbw first ball for 36, with Andre Nel, the returning Schofield soon following before Pedro Collins was last man out, caught behind off Smith.

Derbyshire were soon 21-3 in their reply as Garry Park, Stuart Law and Steve Stubbings were dismissed. Dan Redfern and Wavell Hinds provided a little stability but Redfern fell for 28 and Hinds for 26.

Collins took four wickets for Surrey, including a burst of 3-8 in 12 balls to reduce Derbyshire to 88-7 but Smith (35 not out) and Wagg (22 not out) took their side into the lead.
