Last-day drama sees rained-off Marehay survive relegation threat
ON A dramatic last day in Derbyshire County League Division One, the teams who began it in the two relegation places were also the two who finally went down.
Half of the division could mathematically have been relegated as the final round of matches started on Sunday but even a win for bottom-placed Shipley Hall proved insufficient, as they finished one point short of Marehay.
For Marehay, it was a nail-biting day in that their game at Rolleston was cancelled, so they were left watching what the others would do and the five points for the called-off match proved just enough in the end.
Shipley bowled Swarkestone out for 157 to give themselves a chance, before edging nervously past the target with seven wickets down and 11 balls to spare.
But Shipley's fate was sealed up at Staveley Welfare, who needed – and achieved – a similarly close victory to ensure they stayed up.
They bowled Clifton out for 135, with four wickets each for Joe Bullimore and Chris Bullimore, before getting home by two wickets, thanks largely to 53 from Jake Vernon.
Matlock went into the weekend only eight points above relegation but a comfortable victory over Nutbrook made them safe and sent Nutbrook.
The visitors were bowled out for 124 before veteran Derek Randall hit 71 not out to ensure a seven-wicket victory.
At the top of the table, the two promotion places had already been decided and Rolls-Royce needed only three points to secure the title.
Those they got in making 177-5 at home to Denby, before the visitors won the game by six wickets.
But second-placed Aston-on-Trent finished on a low note as well, beaten by four wickets at home to Stainsby Hall.
