Defeat means no risks for Langeveldt

THE end of Derbyshire's involvement in the Twenty20 Cup will mean that Charl Langeveldt is to get extra time to recover from a sore knee before the return to Championship action on Wednesday.

The county's leading wicket-taker was left out of the trip to Old Trafford yesterday and, because quarter-final qualification is now beyond Derbyshire, he is unlikely to take any part in their remaining two matches – at home to Durham tomorrow and at Leicester on Friday.

Tom Lungley, who played for the first time in almost a month yesterday, should get his chance to return to form.

“Charl has got a bad knee and we don't want to make it worse by playing him when he's not quite fit,” said head of cricket John Morris.

“He has been fantastic for us. We'll assess where we are with him and look after him, so we've got him for when it's important.

“If we are out of this competition, the next two games aren't important but it's ideal for Tommy to carry on playing and get a few overs under his belt.”

It is unlikely even Langeveldt could have done much to stop Lancashire's New Zealand batsman Lou Vincent in the nine-wicket defeat at Old Trafford and Morris accepted that one man's inspired hitting had changed the game.

“We thought we had got a good score but Vincent made mincemeat of it,” he said.

“I thought his first 50 was quite fortunate but his second 50 was magnificent.

“There are fine margins in this game sometimes.

“I thought we had put quite a competitive total on the board and it's not been enough because one of their players has got a hundred in 59 balls.

“Vincent played fantastically well. Sometimes you have to take your hat off to the opposition.”
