After tearing a muscle under his arm in the opening match of the campaign at Bristol in April, that all added up to a memorable night for the 25-year-old.
“I'm very proud,” he said. “I just swung from the hip and, thankfully, it came off.
“You need a good start and one of the batters has to go through, that was the plan and it worked perfectly and I'm so pleased it was me who was able to get the hundred.
“I haven't been able to throw hard or bowl yet but I've been striking it pretty well in the indoor nets for the last two weeks.”
Smith also paid tribute to his partner in a stand of 149 for the second wicket – Wavell Hinds, who made 61.
“He is awesome to bat with – very mature and laid back, a typical West Indian,” said Smith.
“It's probably the best innings I've ever played and I thoroughly enjoyed it because I had Wavell's calming influence at the other end.
“He actually mistimed a couple of those that went for six, so I'm looking forward to when he actually does time it well.”
Head of cricket John Morris was also considerably happier than he had been the previous night at Durham but said he won't be satisfied until his team repeat the performance regularly, starting against Lancashire at the County Ground tonight (7pm).
“We were down in the dumps, now we are full of elation but we keep our feet on the ground,” he said.
“We are not going to sit back and think 'that's it' because we have another big game straight away.
“I'm delighted for Wavell, whose shown what he's about, but even more delighted for Greg because he's been injured and frustrated, so it's nice for him to get the score he has.”
