Kevin delighted to join the 400 club

Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 09:55

KEVIN Dean had to be content with gaining membership to only one elite band when he tormented Bangladesh A yesterday.

With his third wicket of the day and his fifth of the innings, the 32-year-old left-arm bowler became the 29th county player to take over 400 first-class wickets.

Number 401 followed with his next ball – and thoughts turned to the possibility that Dean might join an even more select band for taking all 10 wickets in an innings.

“I had a good lbw shout for the seventh but got turned down,” he said. “I think if I had got the seventh, that would have brought the number nine in and you can really go for eight, nine and 10.

“I had to stick at six and come off because the body's just about hanging together. There's always the second innings.”

Nevertheless, Dean, who has a keen awareness of personal statistics and his place in the history of the game, was pleased to reach the 400 milestone.

“At the start of the season, you set yourself targets and that was one of the first ones for me personally,” he added.

“It's nice to join the 400 club because there's not many around, especially as there's not been so many people done it in recent times. I'm very proud, very happy.

“I had two chances for the hat-trick of hat-tricks as well – and one of them would have been for the 400. My dad said to me when I got my first one it wasn't good enough and I should try to get the hat-trick of hat-tricks. That's still a target of mine.”

Another aim for Dean is to claim more than 10 wickets in the match for the fifth time in his career and he hopes that could earn a first-team recall, after only one Championship appearance this season.

“I'm part of the squad and when I get a chance now, I have to take it,” he said.

“Nobody has a guaranteed spot in the first team and we've got great strength in depth in our bowling now. That's the way it should be.

“As long as I can keep going, John (Morris) knows what he gets from me and there's still a lot of cricket to be played.”
