Kiwi star in run blitz to end chance of Twenty20 qualification

Tuesday, June 24, 2008, 10:47

NEW Zealander Lou Vincent made short work of a decent Derbyshire total in the Twenty20 Cup yesterday at Old Trafford.

A nine-wicket defeat for the Phantoms dealt a final fatal blow to their chances of reaching the quarter-finals of the competition and Vincent's bludgeoning 102 not out was the murder weapon.

He made Derbyshire's 153-5 look hopelessly inadequate but it wasn't a bad score. For once, it was the bowling attack that failed to rise to the occasion.

Wavell Hinds was largely responsible for giving Derbyshire a chance of extending their interest in the Twenty20 Cup with a fine unbeaten 72, his highest score for the county.

The West Indian shared a fourth-wicket stand of 103 with Jamie Pipe and the Phantoms could be fairly content with their efforts after being put in.

Certainly, it wasn't a bad recovery from 45-3.

Greg Smith had his off stump pegged back by Glenn Chapple in the third over and opening partner Dominic Telo was deceived by a slower ball from the same bowler, mistiming a pull to midwicket.

Rikki Clarke, on stand-by before the game because of the impending arrival of his first child, was soon back in the pavilion as he was lured forward by the third ball from young leg spinner Simon Marshall and was stumped for three.

The potential was there for another game to slip beyond Derbyshire before the end of their innings but Pipe raised hopes by driving his second ball over extra cover for six and a stand was born.

It was a very good partnership, with Hinds showing great maturity to allow Pipe as much of the strike as he could while the wicketkeeper was in early free-swinging mode and then taking on the aggressor role himself as his partner settled.

Pipe was at his punishing best in the 11th over, bowled by Kyle Hogg, hitting the tall right-armer for a six and two fours, but Hinds is beginning to strike the ball as cleanly and firmly as we know he can.

His 50 came off 41 balls with six fours and he finished the innings by thumping his 10th boundary to long on, having faced only 52 balls.

If nothing else has come from this Twenty20 campaign, it has got the Jamaican in fine shape for the rest of the season.

Pipe was out to the third ball of the final over for 44 and was irritated at having picked out extra cover but his contribution was a valuable one. He faced 38 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes.

The partnership was only the second of over 100 by a Derbyshire pair in this competition and the other also featured Hinds – with Greg Smith at Headingley two weeks ago.

Even though Charl Langeveldt, their most effective bowler, was resting his sore knee, there was a spring in the step of the Phantoms as they took to the field.

But Vincent was ready to throw caution to the wind. He gained momentum quickly with three of his early boundaries flying off the outside edge to fine third man and finished spectacularly.

His first 50 came off 36 balls and his hundred took only 59. There were three sixes and 11 fours in his powerful display and the winning run came with 22 balls to spare.

With it went Derbyshire's final chance of going through to the last eight.
