Morris says conditions were bad enough for game to be called off

Thursday, June 12, 2008, 08:00

JOHN Morris was left with plenty to ponder as Derbyshire emerged from the Riverside gloom last night with a Twenty20 Cup defeat.

Even though his team almost pulled off a victory, the head of cricket knew his players had not performed well enough before Durham's winning runs came with one ball to spare.

But clearly, though he was being careful about what he said, Morris felt the game should have been called off before it finished in almost complete darkness.

“Should we have played? Probably not,” he said.

“We know we've got to play the game and we know we've got to provide entertainment but when it becomes so dark that you can't see the ball, what are you supposed to do?

“We have to be entertaining but I think that was taking it a bit too far.

“It sticks in the throat because conditions were so bad but I'm not demoralised because we went close against a good outfit. At one stage, I honestly thought we were going to sneak it.

“That would have been a great result for us because it would have been one we probably didn't deserve.

“Greg Smith did brilliantly at the top end but we didn't crack on and that's what cost us.

“I'm not going to point fingers at people but there were not enough runs scored per ball. There were too many not getting singles at times and rotating the strike but that's something we have to learn.

Having said that, we stuck in, we snarled and we tried. We had the chance to win again and that's all I keep asking for.

“We know what our failings are from this game and we will talk about that, then, hopefully, learn from it.”

Derbyshire will have no time to work on their tactics, with their next match away to Yorkshire tonight (5.30pm).
