Derbyshire cricket: Someone needs to make big impact in run chase, says Stubbings

Friday, July 03, 2009, 07:30

THE requirement is for one of the Derbyshire batsmen to set the right example if Derbyshire are to close their LV County Championship match at home to Leicestershire today with a victory.

Derbyshire pulled to within 47 runs of the away side's 412 in their first innings but it was an effort build mainly around bits and pieces of innings, with Garry Park's 72 the highest score.

Five others were dismissed for totals between 40 and 50 and opening batsman Steve Stubbings knows that may not be good enough second time around.

"Although we got a score in the high 300s, it was noted that no-one went on and got a hundred themselves and that's something we could probably be better at generally through the season," he said.

"There are a lot of guys who are pretty hungry to get a big score.

"It needs someone in the top order to get a big score and that should see us home.

"It was a great effort by our guys to get back into the game because after they got over 400, a lot of sides would have succumbed to the pressure but we worked our way back into the game and it's probably just nudging in our favour now."

Derbyshire will certainly need Dan Redfern available to play his part in the run chase but he left the County Ground badly swollen and bruised around his right cheek yesterday.

The 19-year-old was hit fielding at short leg when Tom New clipped away a full toss. The helmet absorbed most of the impact but it was a nasty blow and Derbyshire will wait to see how Redfern recovers overnight.
