“I blame the people themselves for poor budgeting and not getting their priorities right.
I'm not saying some people can always afford a good balanced diet but having nothing to eat is ridiculous. How much does a couple of slices of toast cost ?”

“Well, if Tesco has 'owt' to do with it then no wonder, because they are ridiculously expensive!

But I agree with msmizzo - A supermarket's own loaf is about 50p, pot of paste 30p, pot of jam 30p, tin of beans 25p, 4 x cup a soups 50p etc etc so to say they can't afford to eat ANYTHING is an exaggeration. I have been in the situation where I can't afford to eat much, but still managed to get some toast or a sandwich every day.

I'm pretty sure that with a bit of thought everyone can afford to eat something, especially with the likes of Farmfoods, Aldi, Lidl etc to shop at. Home Bargains and B&M sell vastly reduced (in date) food items as well so no excuse IMO!”

“A bit of old wartime imagination and improvisation would probably help. Back to basics.
If I buy the raw materials for one of my home made chilli of evil concoctions, after cooking I can box up four portions for the freezer, all for less than the price of one of these so called 'ready meals' with all of it's extra packaging. A tin of cheapo beans with a spoon of Worcester sauce in it and a sprinkle of mixed herbs tastes as good as the expensive brands, and as mentioned by TMK10 a bit of legwork to get the best budget buys can reap rewards.
Anyway, how many of these families smoke?”

“I'm not sure about people starving but I certainly know of people who have radically had to change their food shopping habits in order to economise, due to job losses and increasing costs of living. Personally I've switched to Lidl for lots of items ; sorry Sainsburys but if I lose my job, see a pay freeze in a new job & various costs keep on rising this is the outcome for me & many others. I'm definitely not buying branded goods as much & shop around for deals. Then again I'm lucky - there are some people who are really struggling.
And don't forget that while we struggle the likes of Cameron, Clegg & Milliband will be happily tucking into the plushest nosh around ; no money worries for the elite.
I take on board all comment about wartime tactics, but as that ended a lifetime ago we should quite rightly expect better for the poor, the old and the vulnerable.”

“Low wages, subsidised by govt. benefits- soon to be reduced and much harder to claim/continue claiming; billions of £'s in offshore tax havens instead of the pockets of the working class, being spent and stimulating a stagnated economy; millions of unemployed getting less than one can reasonably live on; disabled losing their DLA under the new tick-box ATOS assesments; and it WILL get worse when those on benefits are sanctioned for up to THREE YEARS for the slightest infringement of impossible requirements to claim their ENTITLEMENT, when those deemd 'under occupied' lose a significant amount of their housing benefit despite the lack of smaller homes for them and when those in reciept of Council Tax benefit are expected to bear the burden of the new under-funded localised payments.”

“I maintain the political class in this country will not be happy until we have substantial numbers of people on the streets, in total poverty.
We seem to be returning to victorian values, with a rich upper class dictating to the working class whatever they choose. Anyone challenging them is described as 'fruitcake' or 'racist' or some random 'ism', to nulify proper challenges to their authority.
Everything that happens at present has a disproportionate effect on the poor & vulnerable, while rich pigs get richer, avoid justice & screw the tax man blind.
We all need to step up & land some blows on these elitist swines, however, whenever we can.”

“A lot of them probably had takeaways the previous 6 nights out of 7 because they are too lazy to do proper cooking. How else did this obesity whatsit start?”
