“1. The government is quiet about how much "green" energy is costing us. See http://tinyurl.com/42bj35v. If we stopped paying excessive amounts for wind and solar energy, which includes paying wind turbine operators when the wind isn't blowing, then our bills shouldn't be as high as they are now.
2. I've no idea.”

“these death rates being higher are more down to uk residents not being sensible and not wrapping up warm enough in the cold climate or taking proper due care where it is needed.
the colder countries dont have these numbers because they know how to deal with the issues. IE see what happens when a little ice and snow falls on our streets compared with the countries that always have it.”

"these death rates being higher are more down to uk residents not being sensible and not wrapping up warm enough in the cold climate or taking proper due care where it is needed."
Utter rubbish.
The biggest killer in cold weather is thermal shock to people with heart conditions. Heart failure affects 900,000 people in Britain yet it is barely recognised by "authorities". One lung full of cold air can be enough to turn heart failure into a heart attack, yet the sheer ignorance of the condition shown by people is astounding.
How can people "take due care" when one breath of cold air can kill - or perhaps you think they should cease working, cease shopping, cease having a life?”

“Tis true P-bear,the more you are used to a certain condition, say for example running, the less chance you have of having a heart attack whilst doing this activity.
So it goes that if you are not used to extreme cold, then the odds of you having a bad reaction when faced with it are pretty high.
You hear of people having heart attacks through strenuous excercise all the time, because the body is not used to it.
In those countries where it is say -20,those crazy residents take a dip in the freezing rivers.......Not for too long tho,or they would have a heart attack.”

“@Green_Roads,
1. "Even higher charges need to be implemented to contribute more to tackling climate change". By what mechanism? Simply pricing the poor, often elderly, in Britain out of being able to heat their homes in winter? If you however are suggesting that the UK invests in research into developing 4th generation thorium reactor technology, such as India is doing at Mumbai's Bhabha Atomic Research Centre then I would say that is more productive, but can be done by business investment rather than by hurting everyone today through higher charges.
2. "Space programs don't feed the poor". Maybe countries with space programmes and problems with poverty should give welfare programmes a higher priority.”

“@Green_Roads
Some countries don't need it more than us. http://tinyurl.com/8xj7e2q
Maybe that money could be put towards developing new technology solutions rather than paying people generous amounts for on-roof trickle-chargers.
If instead of paying 30+ pence per kwh for an individual house to benefit, one rich enough to pay for the panels at that; the money could be invested in researching technologies that would benefit all.”

“@green_roads Even the Indian Government says it doesn't need or require the aid.
http://tinyurl.com/8xj7e2q
It's incredible that we are giving out aid that isn't needed whilst people in the UK badly need support just to give the fig-leaf that we are still a major world power.”

“Green_Roads so you advocate giving even more aid to a country who spends their money on space programmes and nuclear technolory while their people starve do you? Well perhaps if they used that money, billions of it, feeding their people and providing housing for them then it would be better spent. As it is it is an insult to every tax paying person in this country, the same tax payers who are struggling to heat their own homes to see money going to countries who don't care whether their people starve.
Stop all aid and spend it on those who fought to keep our country free so they don't freeze to death this winter.”

“Even more reason to Reform the ill thought out Smoking Ban in our Pubs and Clubs. How many older people who Choose to smoke have to stand outside their local pub or club just to have a social life. Government created the problem, time for them to show some common sense, a Separate room or smoking allowed venues would give all adults the same choice as to where to visit or work and help save the Industry.”

What a total plonker you are Green_Roads. So you think pushing UP heating costs so that even more people die is a good idea?
Why dont you crawl back under whatever slimy rock you emerged from.”

“Green_Roads makes some idiotic comments, on another forum he/she is going on about how good the Argentines are, yet Argentina's Genetic engineering causes deforestation.
A Greenpeace study reveals how GE soybean has contributed to the accelerated destruction of the Yungas forest, in the northern province of Salta --one of the economically poorest but biologically richest in Argentina. The Yungas mountain rainforest, or 'cloudforest', is probably the most biodiverse area of Argentina.
Why should we be taxed on our fuel when irresponsible countries like Argentina are causing so much damage to our environment?”

“There is another story today in the Telegraph (national paper) that apparently the UK had to plead with America to be part of the gulf flotilla near Iran because the Americans thought our contribution was insignificant.
Could we please stop wasting money pretending to be a major world power, and cut our cloth accordingly! The country is in dire straits, we need to be honest and not playing power politics from another era with our aid and military, the money is needed in the UK!”

“Both should be dealt with, first the fuel companies should be re nationalised and emphasis on lowering the charges a priority. No-one in this country should die from hypothermia in this day and age and aid should not be sent to countries when they have space programmes and nuclear weapons. It makes you wonder where that money is going to when we read about areas where people still live in abject poverty. I thought that was where the money was supposed to spent. There are empty classrooms devoid of furniture when the money was allocated for it. Mismanagement at best and out and out corruption at worst. The money spent on aid could be spent on buying back our energy companies.”
