Why are drunks a higher priority than businesses?
I REFER to your article "Drinkers' safety paramount, say police over road closure" (Derby Telegraph, February 26).
I refrain from saying what I really think of the police and council's comments regarding the closure of the Strand.
But putting much-needed business at financial risk to protect a few idiots who choose to drink too much beggars belief. These people should be locked up for the night, somewhere they can do no harm.
If safety on the corner of the Strand and Wardwick is a genuine concern, then improvements to the road layout should be made for the benefit of law-abiding citizens during the day.

“The tide will turn, Mr Gardner, if we wait long enough. But for now, we are obliged to worship the god of health and safety, whose concerns override any other.
As an example of this obsession, we had traffic lights on Hardy Barn, Shipley not long ago, on a stretch of road with three lanes (the middle one hatched with broken borders) just because work was being carried out on the GRASS VERGE. One lane closed for 'safety reasons', the middle lane non-existant (presumably) so we all had to wait for the green light even though we could see there was nothing coming and even if there was, there was room for two.”
