Awards that celebrate success

Saturday, July 19, 2008, 07:30

STUDENTS and staff from Derby College have been recognised for their achievements at this year's Peak Awards.

Twenty-five awards were given out at a glittering ceremony at the college's Joseph Wright Centre, in Cathedral Road.

Each year, the college asks staff and local companies to nominate people who they feel deserve an award for their progress or support.

Prizes are provided by a variety of organisations, including De Montfort University, Loughborough University, Bowmer and Kirkland, NIC Services Group, Tomlinson Group and Rolls-Royce.

Several students were unable to be present due to personal reasons.

Among them was Angela Onchwari, 19, of Allenton, who was chosen to receive the academic studies student of the year award, sponsored by De Montfort University.

This is despite only coming to Britain three years ago from Africa and having to adapt to the UK way of life.

A college spokesman said: “Angela has astounded us with her hard work and enthusiasm. She is always polite and willing to take part in all class discussions.

“The culmination of an outstanding two years' work came earlier this year when she heard that she had achieved a place at university to study dentistry.

“Our winner will almost certainly go on to achieve greatness in her life.

“She will be remembered with fondness by everyone who has met her.”

Another award winner was Kevin Douglas, 48, of Chaddesden, who received the business services award, sponsored by Danwood.

Mr Douglas works for meat supplier Fairfax Meadow in its transport section, organising deliveries.

He has studied for a business qualification, despite leaving school more than 30 years ago.

Mr Douglas said: “I started the course writing my assignments by hand but by the end, I was doing them on computer after developing information technology skills.”

Award recipients and their families enjoyed a meal before the presentations.

College principal David Croll said the Peak Awards were always a fantastic occasion and an opportunity for everyone to celebrate.

He said: “We are proud of the outstanding achievements of our students.

“However, we also recognise the role which families, friends and colleagues have in encouraging and supporting individuals in their work.

“The evening was not just about celebrating the success of individuals but also about celebrating the success of our learning community,” he added.
