BRIAN Clough biopic The Damned United is one of a string of East Midlands-made films to feature in this year's British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs), writes Nigel Powlson .

The Damned United, partly filmed in Derbyshire and featuring the story of former Rams boss Clough, is one of many films with East Midlands connections to win recognition.

In addition there are five films co-financed by East Midlands screen agency EM Media which have received Bifa nods. This is, further acknowledgment for the body that has supported film-makers such as Shane Meadows and is behind awards successes such as Joy Division-tale Control.

EM Media films have received nominations every year since 2005.

Nominations this year include Nicolas Winding Refn's biopic Bronson (filmed in the East Midlands); Nottingham actress Samantha Morton's directorial debut The Unloved and Mighty Boosh director Paul King's off-the-wall road movie Bunny & the Bull (filmed in Nottingham).

EM Media chief executive Debbie Williams said: "This demonstrates that the East Midlands continues to punch above its weight, gaining recognition on the world stage as a place where innovative and exciting filmmaking happens – and where filmmaking talent is developed and supported through incisive investment from EM Media."

The Damned United has secured a nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category for Jim Broadbent, who played Rams chairman Sam Longson in the film.

Emily Blunt received a Best Actress nomination for her role as The Young Victoria, which filmed partly in Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.

The awards will be presented at The Brewery in London on Sunday, December 6.
