Fine drama evolves from Darwin's life

MIDWEEK TREAT

Creation (Cert PG), Quad, Derby, tomorrow, 2pm.

IN the year that marks the bicentenary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of his seminal work On The Origin Of Species, Hollywood gets in on the act.

Based on Randal Keynes' biography, Creation follows the struggle Charles Darwin has between his revolutionary, potentially blasphemous theories on evolution and his relationship with his religious wife, Emma.

Casting real-life couple Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly as the pre-eminent scientist and his wife, Jon Amiel's beautifully-crafted biopic focuses on the turbulent period before Darwin committed his radical theories to parchment and changed the course of history.

For the Midweek Treat, Qt has joined forces with Derby's arts centre Quad to bring back the old-style midweek matinee to city centre film-going.

Each Wednesday at 2pm the Derby Telegraph's film critic Nigel Powlson will introduce a new film for you to enjoy for a bargain admission price of £5 (£4 concessions) – including a free tea or coffee and biscuits.

NEXT WEEK: The Jacques Tati film, Jour de Fete (Cert U) on Wednesday, October 21, at 2pm.
