I WRITE regarding disabled blue badge parking in the city centre. It would be a good idea for all blue badge holders to have cases reviewed and means-tested on a more regular basis, as I am sure this will ease the problem for disabled drivers and raise a little more revenue for the council's budget.

My friends, who are both disabled, have great difficulty on arrival into the city centre in finding a suitable spot to park.

This parking facility is a must for the severely disabled, especially senior citizens, and should not be abused by able-bodied people.

A small fee could be charged for those who can afford to, according to their income.

“There is a fee of £10 for the Blue Badge but sadly many people apply for them that do not require the facility. It is only for the people who are unable to walk at all or can only walk a few yards. One does not have to wait for too long to see just how many walk quite well after parking the car. whilst just a few appear to be genuine.

I once saw one driver park in a disabled spot whilst his able bodies wife went shopping and he watched quite casually whilst a lady driver in a wheelchair had to park in the normal part of the car park because no spaces were left in the disabled area, and then she had to wheel herself all the way to the shop entrance. I started to walk towards him to give him a piece of my mind but his wife ran to the car and they drove off before I could get to him.

Have never forgot it and realised just how selfish some blue badge holders are.”

So you are suggesting means testing the disabled and discriminating against potentially seriously disabled people who may happen to have a reasonable income?

Scandalous suggestion Mr Dunne, and what would you hope it would achieve? Perhaps those that abuse the system presently are not from high income brackets?”
