HEALTH bosses are preparing for a massive flu outbreak that they fear could kill up to one in 80 people in Derbyshire.

Medical gowns and masks have been stockpiled and plans are in place to give information and drugs to the public to stop the spread of the killer disease.

Experts fear a 15-week pandemic could kill 12,000 people in the county.

And while children and the elderly are normally worst-hit by seasonal flu, a pandemic virus would be strong enough to kill healthy people.

Businesses can expect half of their employees to fall ill.

According to the World Health Organisation, the threat of bird flu mutating so that it can be easily passed from person to person means there is a greater risk of a pandemic now than at any time since the last outbreak in 1968.

Mike Sandys, of NHS Derby City, said: "It's a question of when it happens and not if. We're going to get an outbreak sooner or later. And when it happens, it will have a big impact on the health service and society in general."

“Hmmm - so where is the epidemic coming from?

Me thinks we should look as carefully at the ingredients on the label in vaccines as we do on our food.

    Google "Vaccine Truth"”

“@ John: I think many of us can sympathise when it comes to negative experiences with the NHS! It isn't very constructive to just criticise them and the Government though.

If you have genuine concerns about this threat, why not be proactive about it and do what I did and buy some antiviral medication for yourself?

That way when a pandemic comes, you can just shut yourself away, take your medication and ride out the storm at home away from all the vile 'hoodie's that spit on the streets!”

“Joanne - the ONLY financial contribution made by this lame government is into it's own greedy pockets, and, abroad as NuLabour tries to buy approval abroad.

The health service is in a total mess. This I know from very recent personal experience.

As for "all hands on deck", yes they would be, but only to help the "NuLabour elite". The ordinary peasants would be left to suffer as usual.

How can we trust the NHS toplan for an emergency, they cant even organise their car parks without making a total shambles of it.”

Can't see any other broadcasters picking up this news, so maybe if the slant was more informative and less that of shock tactics, it would be better received.”

“It really makes me laugh that some people are so dismissive of this. One person has written an article about the actual preparations being made and you lot are ridiculing it! Maybe that's why nobody knows much about this subject!!

You can prepare for a pandemic, and there is plenty of info if you just look. The World Health Org say that we are at phase 3 of 6... Governments around the world had spent millions on their plans, do you really think they'd bother if it was just a drug company pushing a product?

It's very easy to dismiss this as most of us haven't experienced a serious pandemic in our lifetimes, but experts think this next one is likely to be a similar strain to the 1918 pandemic - that killed around 40million people worldwide.

I've got my antivirals, so I can afford not to worry, but for those of you who have such a blatant disregard for your own lives may I request that you don't bother wasting resources when you do become ill - just shut yourselves at home and stay away from the rest of us!”

“John, I think this government have made a huge financial contibution to the NHS since being in power. (Although I hate this constant "target setting" culture..)
I think if the worse case scenario were to happen, it would be a case of "all hands on deck."
I do agree with you re the spitting though!”

“One thing is certain. If this should happen out government will make a total mess of combatting it.

One thing I have noticed is the huge increase in the filthy habit of people spitting in the street.
What possesses people, especially it seems the young, to do such a filthy thing which is guaranteed to spread viruses.”

“By the way Joyce in Notts unfortunately a flu pandemic is likely to spread across the world (not just Derby) and Nottingham will not be exempt from this sorry!”

    “No problem Joanne!

Unfortunately there was so much hype around the threat in 2006, many people (including several of the people that have commented on this story) are tired of hearing about it which is dangerous territory as it means that many will underestimate the threat.

Unfortunately, a pandemic could be caused by so many different strains that it is impossible to tell which one. Vaccines are strain-specific so they will not protect you against it if a different straing causes a pandemic. This is why antiviral medication is currently the only form of protection available.

Basically a pandemic tends to occur every 30 years and seeing as the last one was in 1968 we are well overdue. Even the UK Chief Medical Officer says its a matter of when not if.

There is no need to panic though, my advice would to make sure you're well informed on the subject and well prepared.

I think because there has been a high number of cases of H5N1 this year so far that is why it has got people talking again.

Also, I was just having a little research in to it myself and it appears that Indonesia aren't reporting cases anymore to the world health org as they say it affects their tourism. This is alarming as the most cases have occured there in the past!”
