After eight months of anxiety, workers at Bombardier’s Derby factory have been told that its future is secure - at least for the next three years.

Meanwhile Rolls-Royce, Derby’s biggest private sector employer, celebrates £1 billion profits for the first time ever, record sales and a bulging order book.

“Shiftworker, disagree totally with your last comment, sounds to me like you have been rejected from RR in the past and you don't like it.”

“Shiftworker - I think you will find that RR have roles for Qualified Engineers and skilled personnel. Most unskilled work is done by suppliers such as Mitie or people are brought in as required from specialist companies.

I recall learning on a course that a Business is in business to make money. A consequence is that it may have to employ people to make this happen.

The results are great news - but no-one can expect a company to revert to doing things 'the old way' just to create jobs.”

“And this is the problem isn't it anony15? It's all well and good getting these lucrative contracts but not so good if they have a minimal impact on local employment levels. I personally think sour grapes are well justified.”

“Great news and congratulations to those people who worked hard to make this happen. I imagine there will be a few celebrations going on this weekend, and rightly so.”

“Shiftworker, sounds like sour grapes to me. My husband works there and i cannot get in for love nor money!”

“Very good news. However I doubt such fine fortune will convert itself into jobs advertised for RR in particular. It appears that to get a foot in the door you have to be a mate or family member of somebody already working there. How often do you see positions being advertised these days, particularly for unskilled workers? I can only presume that to "get on", you have to take the Agency route.”
