Fallen heroes

Private Ben Ford Private Brian Tunnicliffe Drummer Thomas Wright

The faces you see below portray the human cost of the British Forces' campaign in Afghanistan since it began in October 2001.

Among those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country is local man Private Ben Ford, originally from Chesterfield but who lived in Derby. He died aged just 18 in a roadside bomb on 5 September, 2007. Ilkeston man Private Brian Tunnicliffe, aged 33, died in a road accident on 20 September 2007, and Drummer Thomas Wright, who grew up in Ripley, died aged 21 on 24 June, 2007, when the vehicle he was travelling in was involved in an explosion.
