TWO women were taken to hospital after the living-room floor of their home collapsed into the cellar.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were called to the incident, in John Street, Ilkeston, yesterday at about 4.25pm.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said four women were inside the room when the floor fell through into the sealed-off basement.

He said two of them were taken to hospital but their injuries were not life-threatening.

He said: "We found the floor at a steep angle.

"The furniture in the room had also collapsed and we had to lift the four women out of the room."

“Well I hope there is no woodworm/dryrot going on in the joists in my cellar because I can't think of anything worse than landing in my cellar if the lounge floor collapsed. I have never been down in it in the 13 years I have lived in my house out of sheer fear. It is the one thing guaranteed to give me heart failure.”

“It would be very helpful if the Telegraph could give some better guidance on how to recognize a floor that may collapse. My house has a floor. Will it collapse into the cellar? How can I tell?”
