A window was smashed to get into the Citroen Berlingo, in Nottingham Road, Ilkeston, while the driver was in a newsagent shop, at around 1.20pm on Monday.
The thief, who is white, aged about 18, 5ft 8in and with short hair, wore jeans and a khaki jacket. He ran down Graham Street to a waiting silver car.
