We know Alvaston is not poor relation in the city

I WOULD like to take issue with the recent letter from Bob MacDonald "Where is the money to regenerate Alvaston?" (Derby Telegraph, February 11).

Firstly, he is incorrect when he states the funding available is for youth groups. It is not. This money is available to community groups throughout Alvaston, regardless of age.

And local councillors have not neglected Alvaston as he claims. The money for the district centre was put back into the capital budget at the council meeting on January 30 this year.

My fellow ward councillors and I are committed to regenerating Alvaston, we are at the moment endeavouring to start a Traders' Association for the traders and proprietors of the district centre as we believe regeneration needs more than just new pavements.

We are working with community groups to support and also set up a new residents' association to help them with new projects and reinstate activities for the community that have failed over the past few years.

We listen to what the residents of Alvaston want. We telephone Alvaston residents all year round to ask if they have any issues or concerns regarding Alvaston as well as our frequent councillors on patrol days, when we talk to people and take their ideas on board.

If Mr MacDonald feels Alvaston is the "poor relation" in Derby, he only has to contact us and we can give him a positive update.

“Councillors forget they are there for the people not their own egos. Perhaps if Councillor Winter had been more visible in areas away from Derby Homes properties and if councillors had been more forthcoming with information Bob MacDonald would not need to use soapbox to elicit a response. I agree with Bob when he says we are the poor relation, obesity fuelled by takeaways is normal, closed shop units, no bank, outdoor swimming pool whenever it rains what an advertisement for Alvaston!!! As for youth funding, Labour via our esteemed council leader and local councillor Paul Bayliss have done away with youth clubs devolving it to volunteers and private organisations, putting youth back on the streets. If Councillor Winters track record on following up initiatives is anything to go on we will not see any improvements, was she not involved in setting up shop watch or a traders association shortly after her election, what happened to this? Publicity to launch a project is not enough it needs committment.”

“Alvaston has a really nice Fairground Burger Van. What more could an area wish for? It really takes your eye off the empty business premises.
    Do they pay business rates?”
