And it says it is ready to welcome the celebrities and F1 fans.
A spokeswoman said: “This is great news for the airport and great news for the region.
“At the moment, it is hard for us to say exactly how many people will use the airport each year as a result of this, so we don't know if we will be the busiest airport in the country.
“However, clearly there will be an increase in passenger numbers because of the close proximity we have to Donington Park.
“Being adjacent to it is a huge advantage and we look forward to working with Donington Park because this will be mutually beneficial for both of us.”
The airport said it was already equipped to deal with celebrity clients – it has an executive lounge with complimentary food and drink for VIPs.
Private jet operators are also on standby, ready to take the high-flying clients from around the world to their next destination.
Tom Blakeman is managing director of Airforce Solutions, a private jet charter business based at East Midlands Airport.
He said the Grand Prix would have a huge impact on his business.
“This will be great news for us, for the airport and for the area,” he said. “It will mean East Midlands is the busiest airport each July for the length of this deal.”
Another Donington private jet and helicopter company, Air Charter Services, said it was expecting more business as a result.
Managing director Tony Bauckham said: “We already do the charter for Silverstone, but there it more about helicopters because there is not an airfield so close to the circuit.
“At Donington, we expect much more use of our jet charter service.”
