Blaze damages Long Eaton home while family sleeps

Monday, September 01, 2008, 07:30

A FAMILY and friends escaped from a fire that destroyed the top floor of their Long Eaton home.

The blaze started in the unoccupied front bedroom of the house in Mannion Crescent, at 4.45am on Saturday.

Marcus Poynton, 25, awoke to shouts from his father, Mark, for everyone to get out.

He said: "There was a lot of smoke and I got out as fast as I could. The fire brigade were here within five minutes but the room it started in was completely black."

Also in the house were Mr Poynton's mother, Linda, his brother, Luke, 17, and his friend Mark Hough, 28, of Warren Street, Derby. Luke's girlfriend was also in the house.

Mr Poynton said no-one was injured but his family would now have to find temporary accommodation.

Mr Hough, who had been sleeping over at the house after a night out, said: "The smoke got everywhere. If it had been another 15 minutes we could have died."

Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 5.40am and are investigating the cause.
