BREAKING NEWS: Derbyshire company fined after workplace accident

Thursday, July 17, 2008, 17:35

AN ILKESTON framing company has been fined £3,500 after an employee lost part of his thumb and index finger in an accident.

Paul Boam, 47, from Nottingham, suffered the injuries whilst using a saw and has been unable to return to work since.

Just Frames Ltd, based at Albany Mill, Lower Middleton Street, was also ordered to pay £3,797 costs at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court today after pleading guilty to failing to ensure that all employees had received adequate training.

After the hearing, the Health and Safety Executive warned companies to ensure their employees received health and safety training.

HSE Inspector Samantha Farrar said: “This incident could have been avoided if the company had trained its staff to use woodworking machinery.

“Employers must ensure that woodworking machine operators are properly trained and that they are made fully aware of the risks associated with such machinery.”
