Breaking news: Derbyshire flooding update

Saturday, September 06, 2008, 10:45

FLOODING was reported across the county overnight and this morning after prolonged heavy rain.

But the worst hit place was Ashbourne where a number of residents were evacuated or forced upstairs in their houses after the River Henmore burst its banks.

Firefighters were called in from Buxton and Kingsway, in Derby, to help pump out the cellar at the Berrisford Arms in in King Edward Street and properties in School Lane, Green Lane and Cooper’s Gardens.

More flooding was reported in Fenny Bentley and localised flooding in Mickleover led to an elderly man having to leave his home.

There was also flooding at Etwall, Hatton, Stenson, Findern and Newton Solney.

A watch was being kept on a number of Derbyshire rivers.

The River Wye burst its banks at Ashford in the Water and the river Amber at South Wingfield was just two feet below flood level by mid-morning.

The River Derwent in Matlock was five feet below the bank at 9.30am and four feet below the bridge in Derwent Stret, Derby.

Surface water on the A38 led to a collision between four vehicles at about 3am.

No-one was hurt but the road remained closed until after 8am.

Weather forecasters have warned that there is more rain to come and the Environment Agency  issued two severe flood warnings, the highest level of flood alert, for the River Wye from Buxton to Rowsley.
