Cannabis factory found in Derby

Sunday, October 05, 2008, 19:44

HUNDEREDS of cannabis plants were discovered by police at a house in Derby over the weekend.

Officers were called to the semi-detached property in Bramfield Avenue after the owner, who rents the house out, found the locks had been changed.

They spent Saturday night and yesterday morning removing the plants and carrying out a thorough search of the property.

People living nearby said they were shocked at the news and had no idea the plants were being grown inside the house.

Gary Muggleton, 43, said: “The man that owns the house has been renting it out for about four years and there have been several different people living there over the years.

“There was a group of students a while back but the people living there now have only been there a few months I'd say.

“I've never seen anyone come in or go out, just a car parked in the drive, we had no idea anything like that was going on.”

Another neighbour, who didn't want to be named, said: “It’s a total shock, we didn't know anything was going on until we saw the police bringing the plants out.

“There was sign that anything was being grown inside the house, no smells or anything, everyone was really surprised.”

Derbyshire police confirmed that the owner of the house had tried to gain access to the house but found the locks had been changed by the tenants without his consent.

He immediately contacted officers who made the discovery.

A police spokesman said: “Officers discovered a considerable number of plants inside the house running into hundreds.”

An investigation is now being carried out but no-one has been arrested.

This is the fourth incident of this kind in Derby in the last two months.

On September 18, two people were arrested after police raided their home Willowcroft Road, Spondon and discovered cannabis plants in their garage.

A week earlier, on September 11, police found about 60 plants at a rented house in Grange Street, Normanton, along with hydroponics equipment.

And on August 11, homes in Sutherland Road, Normanton, had to be evacuated after a house, which police described as a cannabis factory, caught on fire.

More than 300 plants and hydroponic growing equipment were found in the property.
