City turns pink for its first gay parade (with picture slideshow)

SUN, music and thousands of people made Derby's first gay pride event a success.

The Derby Goes Pink event began with an eye-catching parade with floats and participants dressed in pink and ended up in a mini-festival on Bass's Recreation Ground.

Events co-ordinator Joel Stanley said Saturday's success meant another would be planned for next year.

Mr Stanley said: "Everybody I spoke to had a fantastic day. The weather was gorgeous and we didn't have any trouble. It will definitely be happening next year."

Mark Longdon, of Derby, said it was fantastic for the city's gay community.

The 34-year-old said: "It brings people together to support each other. When I came out 10 years ago, I would never have imagined Derby would have something like this in the future. It's taken some special guys to get this together. And it's not just for gay people, it's an event for everyone. It gives people on the outside of the gay scene an insight."

Nathan Bridges, as Drag Queen Vicky, said more than 2,000 people had turned up.

"People don't realise there's a big gay community now in Derby. This is about showing people that love is love – whatever you are."

Rachael Hamilton, of Ladybank Road, Mickleover, said: "It's been really good fun. They hold these events all across the world, so why not do it here?"

Lucy Hawkridge 27, of St Alban's Road, Derby, said: "It's been a brilliant atmosphere. There was a real mix of people. Everybody was just having a bit of fun."

The musical entertainment was headlined by Taka Boom, Chaka Khan's sister, who has had several top 10 dance hits.
