Fund-raisers flock to the centre of fun

Saturday, November 15, 2008, 07:30

THOUSANDS of people descended on Westfield Derby last night as the shopping centre took centre stage for Children in Need in the East Midlands.

The action kicked off at 1.30pm with BBC coverage hosted by Anne Davies and TV star Jonathan Wilkes. There were also special appearances from Postman Pat, Daleks and the FAB1 car from Thunderbirds.

A Pudsey Does Stars in Their Eyes competition featured live performances throughout the day.

Kids enjoyed a Pudsey mascot race at the start the day, before a fireworks display took place from the top of Westfield car park shortly after 9.30pm.

Fund-raising events also took place at schools, colleges and pubs across the city. At the Bonnie Prince, in Chellaston, barman Tom Howard sat in a bath of baked beans for 10 hours to raise hundreds of pounds.

Students from Landau Forte College wore fancy dress and collected money in Derby city centre and at Chaddesden Park Junior School, teacher Luke Samuels had his long hair shaved off for the first time in 20 years.

Britain's Got Talent winnerGeorge Sampson will still turn on Derby's Christmas lights tonight, despite a staged partial switch-on for Children in Need.

BBC1 viewers last night saw a small section of the lights turned on for the televised appeal. But a Westfield spokesman confirmed the switch-on was not the official one, which will take place today.
