Global traveller's back in the city to make you look on top of the world

Saturday, November 29, 2008, 07:30

A FORMER University of Derby student, who decided he wanted to be a professional photographer while travelling the world, is now running a successful city studio.

James Corbett was two years into a geography degree when he realised it wasn't what he wanted to do, so the took some time off to travel.

The 29-year-old became interested in photography while capturing images during his journeys and, on returning to Derby, enrolled on a fine art photography degree course.

After graduating in 2004, he worked for Olan Mills in Derby but, after being made redundant, opened his own studio, Firefly Photography in Friar Gate, just over a year ago.

He aims to provide contemporary and artistic photos at an affordable price and already has plenty of satisfied customers.

Providing everything from traditional family portraits to makeover shoots and band album covers, James said it is the variety of the job he enjoys so much.

He said: "It's all about the fun – I try and make it a really good experience and love meeting different people and producing something they can take away and keep forever.

"The makeovers are really popular and I have a make-up artist and hair stylist on site who will spend an hour making the customer look amazing before I take the pictures.

"We also sell gift vouchers, which make really nice, unusual presents, and those are popular at this time of year."

Prices start from just £15 for a family portrait experience, which includes a half-hour photo shoot and a 10x8 print. Customers can then add further prints, CDs and other products on top of that.
