Judy will spread some US cheer at festive feast
Thanksgiving has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863 and will be celebrated by a number of people who originate from the US and now live in the city.
Judy Sturgis, director of Derby gym Stripes Fitness, moved here from Delaware 16 years ago and says this year's Thanksgiving festival is more important than ever.
In a year that has seen thousands of people in Derbyshire lose their jobs due to the credit crunch, Judy feels it is a good time to remind people of the positive things in their lives.
She said: "There are a lot of people who are struggling at the moment. But Thanksgiving is a chance to think about what you do have, rather than the things you don't have."
Judy is also hosting a Thanksgiving feast at her Stores Road gym on Saturday, and is inviting members to bring along a friend who has had a tough year.
She said: "I've invited members to bring along someone who is going through a personal tragedy or hardship so we can give them a bit of sunshine and cheer.
"It's the biggest party of the year – the food is a sight to be seen.
"There are going to be five turkeys with all the extras, including sweet potato, stuffing, cranberry sauce and cabbages.
"Then, on top of that, everyone who attends is asked to bring a dish. As well as the traditional American dishes, we'll be having German, Italian and Irish cuisine – it's going to be a major feast.
"There will also be dancing, singing and lots of alcohol – I'm really excited about it."
Derby County president and chief executive Tom Glick is another American who will be celebrating Thanksgiving, which officially falls today.
He said: "We're having a party at our house and have my mother and father-in-law coming over from Philadelphia.
"Thanksgiving is my favourite holiday because it's about getting together with family and friends to have some terrific food while enjoying some great company.
"It's also about taking a four-day weekend but I don't think I'll be doing that!"
Other Americans celebrating thanksgiving include Sharon and Joe Smith, from Mickleover.
The couple, who have three autistic children, are inviting friends round to give thanks at their home in Sandpiper Lane.
Sharon said: "We'll be having a big feast with a turkey and have invited a couple of families round to join us.
"It's nice when you get the whole family together to give thanks for what you have got."
