Police visit plastics factory in PM terror threats probe

Saturday, August 30, 2008, 07:30

A DERBYSHIRE factory has now become involved in an ongoing police investigation into a terror threat against the Prime Minister.

Greater Manchester police confirmed yesterday that HL Plastics, in Denby, was visited by officers, although they refused to comment on the reason for their inquiries.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: "We attended the factory as part of our inquiries, but no search was carried out."

She said she could not say more about the visit to the firm in Denby Hall Business Park.

A statement issued by HL Plastics last night said: "We can confirm Greater Manchester police officers made some inquiries at our factory."

The company also said it could not comment further on the matter.

But sources close to the Telegraph said the raid was part of an ongoing investigation into a plot to kill Gordon Brown, which has led to five arrests, including one in Normanton on Tuesday.

A 29-year-old man, believed to be from Kosovo, was arrested after officers stormed a house in Moore Street on Tuesday.

And yesterday the Evening Telegraph revealed an address in Alvaston was also searched as part of the investigation on Wednesday.

Officers searched the semi-detached home in Kelmoor Road, Alvaston, but police said it no longer formed part of their terror investigation.

Yesterday, three of the men appeared in court charged with terror offences as part of the same investigation.

They are Ishaq Kanmi, 22, of Cromwell Street, Blackburn, and brothers Abbas Iqbal, 23, and Ilyas Iqbal, 21, both of Percival Street, Blackburn.

All three of the men appeared at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court, in London.

Kanmi is accused of threatening to "eliminate" the Prime Minister and his predecessor, Tony Blair, being a member of al-Qaeda and trying to encourage others to join the organisation.

Two other men, brothers Abbas and Ilyas Iqbal, who were arrested at the same time, appeared alongside Kanmi charged with other terror offences and were also remanded in custody.

Kanmi and Abbas Iqbal, 23, are accused of spreading terrorist literature. Iqbal is also charged with owning terrorist material, including camouflage equipment.

Iqbal's brother, Ilyas, 21, is accused of owning terrorist material and conducting research into terror.

The three men were arrested on August 14. Kanmi and Abbas Iqbal were held at Manchester Airport and Ilyas Iqbal in Accrington, Lancs. Yesterday they were remanded in custody.

Greater Manchester Police are still questioning two other men in relation to the alleged threat – including the man arrested in Derby.
