Pop star to launch Olympic celebrations in Derby

The Australian singer will be performing during the city's hand-over celebrations in August where she will close an afternoon of entertainment.
The 16-year-old is best known for her top ten hit, Sweet About Me, and was announced as the headline act during a visit from Paul Deighton, chief executive of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games.
Mr Deighton was in Derby's Market Place this morning to learn more about what Olympic celebrations are planned for the city.
The Olympic Hand-over event will be a free and is due to take place from 1pm until 9pm on August 24, during which live coverage of the closing ceremony in Beijing will be shown on the big screen.
Gabriella Cilmi will close the afternoon of entertainment which will also feature local artists, musicians and performers.
Mr Deighton said Derby had pulled out all the stops for the celebrations.
He said: “There are some really exciting plans in place in Derby.
“Having talked to the people behind the celebrations there are festivals planned right through the years which are all aimed at bringing the community together which is fantastic.”
