Yoxall resort named best in country

Wednesday, October 15, 2008, 07:30

A SPA resort based in a stately home, which attracts guests such as Take That and Joan Collins, has been named the best in the country at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Hoar Cross Hall Spa Resort, near Yoxall, was named England's Leading Resort at the World Travel Awards, held in Slovakia today.

This is the fourth year in a row that the spa has been given the title, which is voted for by professionals within the travel industry.

Hoar Cross Hall managing director Stephen Joynes MBE said he was delighted that the hard work of his staff had ben recognised once again.

He said: "It's a wonderful achievement and a testament to all the staff we have employed here who have made Hoar Cross Hall a paradise on earth for the thousands of guests we've had coming through our doors."

The Grade II-listed building was built between 1860 and 1869 by Sir Hugo Meynell for his wife Emily Charlotte, the daughter of Viscount Halifax.

Mr Joynes bought it for £1.25m in 1979 and has spent almost 30 years and more than £50m restoring and extending the hall and its estate, which now includes 100 rooms, a golf course, five lakes, saunas and a 26m-long swimming pool.

The luxurious resort is a far cry from the businessman's first enterprise – a £120 fish-and-chip van which he bought in his early 20s after completing his national service with the RAF.

He sold the business, known as Steve's Chippery, for twice what he paid for it and went on to buy and sell another 14 businesses – each time making a profit – before buying Hoar Cross Hall.

Mr Joynes puts his success down to simply being friendly and polite and said: "I think if you can just be nice to everyone you meet, then you can go a long way in business and the awards take care of themselves."

Hoar Cross Hall beat competitors such as Champneys Resort, in Hertfordshire; Danesfield House Hotel, in Buckinghamshire; and the Four Seasons, in Hampshire, to be crowned England's best resort.
