Applying for secondary school

  • Is my child entitled to free school meals or free school milk?

  • Children whose parents receive the following support are entitled to free school meals:

    * Income Support

    * Income based Jobseekers’ Allowance

    * Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

    * Child Tax Credit, provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income, as assessed by the Inland Revenue, that does not exceed £15,575

    * Guarantee element of State Pension Credit

    Primary schools give free milk at lunchtime for children who have a free school meal.

  • What if I want my child to attend a school in a different local authority?

  • Under the 1996 Education Act, parents have the right to ask for their child to go to another school run by another council.

    If you include a school outside the authority in your preferences, you should still apply to your own local authority where you live.

    You own local authority will send the form to the other authority for consideration and liaise with it through the process.

    The decision on whether a child can be offered a place will be taken by the council which runs the school, or the governing body if it is a voluntary aided school or foundation school.
