Derby Crown Court heard that the men stole two laptops, two tablet computers, a games console and some money on September 24.
One of the laptops was found in a bin near the burgled property. Footage of the two men was caught on CCTV in the area.
Howitt, 31, of Moss Street, Derby, and Southgate, 27, of no fixed address, admitted burglary.
Jailing them both for 12 months, Recorder Smith said: No doubt those students have been significantly distressed by the fact their computers were stolen."
