Three quick wickets halt Derbyshire charge
Three wickets before tea put a blot on a decent position for
Derbyshire on the first day of their LV County
Championship match against Northants.
Half-centuries from Wavell Hinds and Greg Smith took them on
to 202-3, after Paul Borrington had scored 57 on his first
Championship appearance of the season, but David Wigley took
three wickets to leave them 239-6 at tea.
Chris Rogers, standing in for Rikki Clarke, won the toss and
decided to bat but he was caught at gully for one by Rob White
trying to drive at David Lucas.
The second wicket fell in the 16th over when Dan Birch elected
to leave a ball from Lucas that clipped the top of his off
stump. He made 15 and the score was 36-2.
The seamers were making life difficult but Borrington and
Hinds put on 74 for the third wicket before Borrington was
caught at third slip, having played with great poise in facing
125 balls with nine fours.
Smith moved swiftly to his 50 off 55 balls with seven fours
but was then caught behind and Jamie Pipe followed first ball,
bowled by Wigley.
Hinds brought up his 50 with his third six and moved on to 76
when he hit Wigley fiercely straight to extra cover. There were
also nine fours in his 112-ball innings.
