FLAMES have ripped through a city centre pub following a major fire in Derby.

Crews were called to The Haus, in the Wardwick, shortly before midnight.

Around 24 firefighters were there at the height of the blaze which saw a major part of the third floor of what is believed to be one of Derby's oldest buildings gutted.

No-one was hurt in the incident.

Crews spent three hours at the scene and a fire investigation team are going back to pub this morning to try and find out how the blaze, which was centred in a kitchen, started.

Watch Manager Paul Sharp, from Nottingham Road, was leading the incident.

He said: "When we arrived the pub had been evacuated, but we did not know whether anyone was still inside.

"Thankfully no-one was hurt and the owners of the pub were alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm sounding.

"This once again demonstrates the importance of having a smoke alarm fitted."

“Defender- I'm not saying it is connected- but there certainly has been a unique concentration of fires of historic buildings in and around Derby; maybe just a remarkable co incidence.

Just a general observation if that's allowed!”

“Observer2, I doubt this has any connection to incidents such as the hippodrome, after refurbishing the building and re-opening it as a restaurant I sincerely doubt it's an attempt to sabotage a listed building.

Perhaps 'Speculator' would have been a more appropriate name for yourself.”

“I have noticed a concentration of fires in old and listed buildings and sites in Derby and surrounds for some time now.

Maybe this one has no connection; or maybe these old buildings are easy pickings?

There clearly needs to be more protection of heritage buildings: they are all that is left of Derby's history...

I wish someone like Maxwell Craven would take up the mantle!”
